Advanced Avalanche Course

The Advanced Avalanche Course runs over five days in Lofoten. It is aimed at those with previous experience, preferably including a basic avalanche course. The aim is to give you a better foundation for making good decisions in the winter mountains and avalanche terrain. The course also focuses on helping you find the best and safest snow.

Topics covered on the course include:

Snow knowledge – Learn more about snow and crystals and develop a deeper understanding of snow conditions.
Individual slope assessment – How do you assess whether a slope is steep enough to ski? Why is it safe for us?
Advanced partner rescue – Develop your skills with an avalanche transceiver. We practise multiple-burial scenarios.
Terrain – How to use the terrain effectively and make good route choices. Terrain classes and how to relate them to avalanche problems.
Avalanche problems – We take a closer look at the avalanche forecast and different avalanche problems, what they mean for us and how to manage them.
Travel in steep terrain – How to move safely through sufficiently steep terrain.

Course dates for 2027:

25 January – 29 January – 8 places
1 February – 5 February – 8 places

The course instructor is either an IFMGA Mountain Guide / Ski Guide or currently training to become a Mountain Guide / NF Avalanche Instructor.

I had no climbing experience at all, but Vegard was patient enough for us to take our time in the climb, ensured to tell us all about the safety and gave tips on how to climb the tough parts!
