Learn to Plan Safer Ski Touring Adventures

This two-day avalanche course in Lofoten is designed for anyone who wants to learn the essential skills needed to make safer decisions while ski touring in the mountains.

Over two days, you will learn how to plan a tour, understand the avalanche forecast, recognize avalanche terrain and make better terrain choices in the mountains. We also work with avalanche transceivers, probes and shovels, giving you the fundamental skills needed for companion rescue.

Most of the course takes place outdoors. We use the current snowpack and avalanche conditions to connect theory with practical observations and real decisions in the terrain.

The goal is to give you a better understanding of snow, avalanches and terrain – and a solid foundation for planning and completing your own ski tours in simple terrain.

What Will You Learn?

Throughout the course, we focus on the essential skills you need to plan and complete safer ski tours:

How to understand and use the avalanche forecast
Basic understanding of snow and avalanches
How to recognize avalanche terrain and terrain traps
Tour planning and terrain choices
Decision-making while ski touring
How to use an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel
Companion rescue and rescue procedures
Basic navigation and safe travel in winter terrain

We spend as much time as possible outdoors, allowing you to practise these skills in real situations. The goal is not simply to learn a set of rules, but to understand how to apply the knowledge when making your own decisions in the mountains.

Who Is the Course For?

This course is suitable for anyone who is new to ski touring, as well as those who already have some experience and want to develop a better understanding of avalanches, terrain and safe travel in the winter mountains.

No previous avalanche knowledge is required, but you should have basic skiing skills and be comfortable spending a full day ski touring.

The course is also a great starting point if you want to continue developing your skills through more advanced avalanche courses.

After two days, the goal is for you to feel more confident in your own assessments and have a solid foundation for continuing to develop as an independent ski tourer.

Experienced Instructors with Local Knowledge

I Fri Natur is based in Lofoten, and our instructors have extensive experience with avalanche education, ski touring and travelling in winter mountain terrain.

Throughout the course, we use the current conditions in Lofoten as an active part of the learning process. Together, we assess the snowpack, avalanche terrain and route choices, and you are involved in the decisions we make throughout the day.

For us, a good avalanche course is about more than learning theory. We want you to understand why we make the decisions we do, giving you a stronger foundation for making good decisions on your own ski tours.

I had no climbing experience at all, but Vegard was patient enough for us to take our time in the climb, ensured to tell us all about the safety and gave tips on how to climb the tough parts!
