Learn Trad Climbing in One of Norway’s Finest Climbing Areas
This 5-day trad climbing course in Lofoten is designed for anyone who wants to become a safer and more independent climber. Over five days, you will develop the skills needed for climbing on traditional protection, efficient rope systems and multi-pitch climbing.
The course takes place mainly on the cliffs and mountains around Henningsvær and Kalle. An area famous for its beautiful granite, classic climbing routes and some of the finest climbing in Norway.
We spend as much time as possible actually climbing. The goal is not simply to learn techniques, but to gain experience using them in real situations on the rock and in the mountains.
Over five days, we work with the skills you need to become a safer and more independent trad climber. We combine instruction with plenty of practical climbing. Allowing you to use the techniques in real situations on the rock and in the mountains.
During the course, we work with:
- Placing and evaluating traditional protection
- Building anchors and efficient belay stations
- Belaying and communication within the climbing team
- Climbing technique on Lofoten granite
- Multi-pitch climbing
- Rappelling and safe descent from climbing routes
- Route selection, planning and decision-making
- Problem-solving and basic self-rescue techniques
The goal is to give you a better understanding of the entire process of a climbing day – from planning and protection to moving efficiently and safely on multi-pitch routes.
Who Is the Course For?
This trad climbing course is for climbers who want to develop their skills and become safer and more independent when climbing on traditional protection.
You should have some previous climbing experience and be familiar with the basic use of a harness, rope and belay device. However, no previous trad climbing experience is required.
The course is suitable both for climbers who want to start leading their own trad routes and for those who have already tried trad climbing and want to gain more experience. Improve their systems and feel more confident in the mountains.
The instruction is adapted to the level of the participants, and five days gives us plenty of time for learning, repetition and – most importantly – lots of climbing.
How the Course Works
The course runs over five days, and we spend as much time as possible outside on the rock and in the mountains. Each day builds on what we have learned previously. Allowing you to gradually take more responsibility and become more independent in your climbing.
We choose climbing areas and routes based on the weather, conditions and the level of the group. Henningsvær and Kalle give us a wide range of options, from shorter crags where we can practise technique and protection to longer multi-pitch routes where you can put your skills into practice.
Throughout the course, you receive close guidance and individual feedback from your instructor. Our aim is to create a safe learning environment with plenty of climbing, progression and a real sense of achievement.
Towards the end of the course, participants take more responsibility for planning and completing their own climbs, with the instructor close by whenever needed.
Experienced Instructors and Small Groups
The course is led by experienced climbing instructors with extensive experience in trad climbing and mountaineering in Lofoten. We know the climbing areas around Henningsvær and Kalle well and choose routes and locations that provide the best opportunities for learning and progression.
We keep the groups small, allowing each participant to receive close guidance and plenty of time on the rock. This also allows us to adapt the instruction to your level and provide individual feedback throughout the course.
For us, a good climbing course is about more than learning individual techniques. Our goal is to help you understand why we do things the way we do, develop good judgement and become better prepared to make your own decisions when climbing independently.
