Climb Vestpillaren – One of Lofoten’s Great Climbing Classics
Vestpillaren on Presten is one of the great classics of Norwegian rock climbing. The impressive granite wall rises above the sea near Henningsvær and has attracted climbers from around the world for decades.
The route offers around 11 pitches of excellent climbing on solid Lofoten granite. With difficulties up to grade 6 and several hundred metres of climbing, this is a long and demanding day. But also one of the great climbing experiences in Lofoten.
Together with an experienced guide, you get to experience the entire Vestpillaren. From the first pitches at the base of the wall to the spectacular views high above the sea. This is a climb for those who already have some climbing experience and dream of completing a true Lofoten classic.
The Route and the Climbing
The day starts with the approach to Presten, where we prepare for a long day on the mountain. At the base of the wall, we go through the plan for the day and prepare the climbing equipment before starting up Vestpillaren.
The route follows natural lines through the impressive granite wall and offers around 11 pitches of varied climbing. Along the way, we encounter everything from beautiful cracks and slabs to steeper and more demanding sections. The hardest passages are graded around 6.
As we climb higher, the views open up across the sea, Henningsvær and the surrounding mountains. Your guide leads the route and manages the technical climbing and safety throughout the day.
Vestpillaren is a long mountain route where both endurance and efficient movement are important. Our goal is to move smoothly through the wall while still having time to enjoy the climbing and the unique feeling of being high above the sea on Presten.
Who Is the Vestpillaren Climb For?
Vestpillaren is for climbers who already have some climbing experience and are comfortable with long days in the mountains. You should have a good level of fitness and ideally some experience with trad climbing or multi-pitch routes.
You do not need to lead at this grade yourself, but you should be comfortable climbing around grade 6 and able to move efficiently on rock. A full day on Vestpillaren requires both endurance and motivation.
Before the climb, we would like to know about your previous climbing experience. For many guests, we also recommend spending a shorter climbing day with the guide beforehand. This gives us the opportunity to climb together, get to know each other and prepare as well as possible for a big day on Presten.
Experienced Guides and Local Knowledge
I Fri Natur is based in Lofoten, and our guides have extensive experience with climbing and mountain guiding in the region. We know Presten and the climbing around Henningsvær well and use this local knowledge to plan the climb according to the conditions and your experience.
On a long route like Vestpillaren, good judgement, efficiency and teamwork are essential. Your guide takes care of the technical climbing and safety throughout the day, allowing you to focus on the climbing and the experience.
For us, a great day on Presten is about more than reaching the top. Our goal is to create a safe and memorable climbing experience on one of Norway’s great mountain classics.
