Ski Touring in Lofoten – Guided Ski Tours with Local Mountain Guides
Join us for ski touring in one of the world’s most spectacular mountain landscapes. Lofoten offers exceptional ski terrain, where alpine peaks rise directly from the sea and every tour combines skiing with incredible views of the surrounding ocean and islands.
At I Fri Natur, our ski tours are led by professional, internationally certified IFMGA Mountain Guides. With extensive local knowledge, we guide both classic routes and lesser-known terrain across the islands. Safety is always our priority, but a great day in the mountains is about more than reaching a summit. We focus on good skiing, learning, flow and finding the best conditions available.
Every tour is adapted to the weather, snow conditions, avalanche situation and the experience and ambitions of the group. Lofoten offers an enormous variety of terrain, allowing us to choose the right objective for the day and make the most of the conditions.
A Typical Ski Day in Lofoten
We generally meet at Trevarefabrikken in Henningsvær, although other meeting points can be arranged. The day starts with a briefing and tour planning, where we assess the weather, snow and avalanche conditions, as well as the group’s experience, fitness and ambitions. Based on this, we choose the best objective for the day.
Ski tours in Lofoten often start close to sea level, and within just a few hundred metres of ascent you find yourself surrounded by steep alpine mountains and views across the ocean. Where conditions allow, we aim for creative routes with great skiing and, sometimes, several descents along the way.
Who Is Ski Touring in Lofoten For?
Our guided ski tours are suitable for a wide range of skiers. You should be comfortable skiing off-piste in varied snow conditions and have a reasonable level of fitness, but you do not need to be an expert ski tourer.
Whether this is your first ski touring experience in Lofoten or you are an experienced skier looking for bigger objectives and new terrain, we adapt the day to your level and ambitions.
For private groups, the tour is completely tailored to you. If you are unsure whether the trip is suitable for your level, get in touch and we will help you choose the right option.
Why Ski with a Local IFMGA Mountain Guide/NORTIND Skiguide?
Conditions in Lofoten can change quickly. Wind, snowfall, temperature and the maritime climate all influence where the best skiing can be found from one day to the next.
Our IFMGA Mountain Guides and NORTIND Skiguides combine professional mountain and avalanche expertise with extensive local knowledge of Lofoten. Rather than following a fixed itinerary, we choose the terrain and objective based on the conditions, the group and where we believe we can create the best day on skis.
For us, guiding is not simply about reaching a summit. It is about making good decisions, finding great skiing and sharing our knowledge of the mountains along the way.
The Ski Touring Season in Lofoten
The main ski touring season in Lofoten normally runs from February through start of May. Each part of the season has its own character.
February and March offer a true Arctic winter atmosphere, with colder temperatures and the potential for excellent winter snow. As the days become longer through March and April, there are more opportunities for longer tours and bigger days in the mountains.
By April and May, long daylight hours and spring conditions can create fantastic ski touring, often with the possibility of skiing high in the mountains while the coastline below is already turning green.
Conditions vary from year to year, and our guides choose routes according to the actual snow, weather and avalanche conditions.
Private Ski Guiding in Lofoten
Private guiding gives you the greatest flexibility to explore Lofoten on your terms. The day is planned around your experience, fitness and ambitions, allowing your guide to choose the terrain that best suits both the group and the conditions.
Private guiding is ideal for couples, friends and small groups looking for a more personal experience, whether the goal is great skiing, developing skills or exploring more challenging terrain. Read more here
