Stetind rises majestically from Stefjorden, an arm of Tysfjorden – a breathtaking sight that leaves most people in awe.

The Stetind East Ridge is an adventure from start to finish. It is a long and demanding mountain route that requires good fitness and solid mountain experience. The journey begins at sea level, and the hike to Hall’s Forepeak, where the climbing section starts, is long but absolutely spectacular.

The route offers an unforgettable combination of dramatic scenery, physical challenges, and true mountain adventure.

The climbing takes place along the East Ridge. The climbing is exposed, but relatively moderate. The Finger Traverse, known as the “bitter fingertips”, is the most difficult section of the route. The climbing grade is 4+, and the traverse feels highly exposed.

Facts about Stetind

Stetind, also known as “Norway’s National Mountain,” is a distinctive mountain peak in Nordland, Norway. Here are some facts about Stetind:

1. Shape and appearance: Stetind is renowned for its unique shape and striking appearance. The mountain has a distinctive needle-like summit that rises dramatically from the surrounding landscape. The mountain is composed primarily of granite.
2. Elevation: Stetind stands approximately 1,392 metres above sea level and is located in Nordland county.
3. Climbing: Stetind is a popular destination for climbers and alpinists. Its steep and technical terrain makes it an adventurous climbing objective. The most popular route is known as the Normal Route, or the East Ridge in climbing terminology. Other well-known routes include the South Pillar and the West Wall/West Ridge, first climbed by Arne Næss Sr. These are impressive and historic ascents.
4. First ascent: The first documented ascent of Stetind took place in 1910. The three climbers who made the ascent were Ferdinand Schjelderup, Carl Wilhelm Rubenson, and Alf Bryn. Their achievement is regarded as a landmark in Norwegian mountaineering and contributed to Stetind’s legendary status.
5. Nature reserve: Stetind is part of the Stetind Nature Reserve, established to protect the area’s unique ecosystem and vulnerable plant life.
6. Symbol: Stetind has become an iconic symbol of Norwegian nature and mountaineering. It is often associated with Norway’s spectacular landscapes and strong outdoor culture.
7. Recognition: In 2002, Stetind was voted Norway’s National Mountain in a poll organised by NRK’s summer radio programme.
8. Season: The best time to climb Stetind is generally during the summer months, once most of the snow has melted. The climbing season usually runs from late June through September.
