Svolværgeita rises high above the town of Svolvær and is one of Norway’s most iconic climbing peaks. Standing between its two distinctive horns, with views across Svolvær, the Vestfjord and the mountains of Lofoten, is an experience you won’t easily forget.

With I Fri Natur, you can climb Svolværgeita with an experienced local guide. No previous climbing experience is required – we adapt the climb to your level and make sure you feel safe and supported throughout the adventure.

This is real mountain climbing on solid Lofoten granite, combining exposure, incredible views and the feeling of reaching a summit you may not have thought possible.

The Hike and the Climb

The adventure starts at the Sherpa Steps in Svolvær, where you meet your guide, get fitted with climbing equipment and go through the plan for the day.

From here, we follow the Sherpa Steps and continue along the trail towards the base of Svolværgeita. The approach normally takes around 40 minutes.

At the base of the mountain, we prepare for the climb. From here, we climb two pitches of solid Lofoten granite towards the iconic horns. The climbing is graded around 4+ and offers a great mix of enjoyable moves and exposed sections. Your guide leads the climb and keeps you securely on the rope throughout.

At the top, we stand between the two distinctive horns, with Svolvær below and panoramic views across the Vestfjord and the mountains of Lofoten. We take time to enjoy the summit and take photos before rappelling back down and following the trail to Svolvær.

Who Is the Svolværgeita Climb For?

Svolværgeita is suitable both for first-time climbers and for those with some previous climbing experience. No previous climbing experience is required, but a normal level of fitness is recommended.

The climb is exposed, and some sections can feel challenging if you are not used to heights. Your guide will adapt the pace to you and help with climbing technique and movement along the way.

For many guests, it is exactly this combination of excitement, safety and a real sense of achievement that makes climbing Svolværgeita an experience they remember for years.

Can beginners climb Svolværgeita?

Yes. You do not need previous outdoor climbing experience to join a guided climb of Svolværgeita. Your guide will give you support you throughout the entire climb. You should be in normal physical condition and comfortable with heights.

How difficult is it to climb Svolværgeita?

Svolværgeita is a real multi-pitch mountain climb. The difficulty is Norwegian grade 4+ (5a) . We help you to master the moves towards the horns.

How long does it take to climb Svolværgeita?

A guided climb of Svolværgeita normally takes around 3–4 hours in total. The exact duration depends on the route, the pace of the group, other climbers on the mountain and the conditions that day.

Can I book Svolværgeita if I am travelling alone?

Yes. Our Svolværgeita climbs run as open groups, and you can book just one spot. You don’t need to put together your own group to join us.

How many people are in each group?

Our open groups have up to 4 participants. We organise the guiding and climbing so that everyone gets a safe and enjoyable experience on the mountain.

Who are the guides?

Our Svolværgeita climbs are guided by certified IFMGA Mountain Guides and aspirant guides. Our guides have extensive experience in climbing and guiding in Lofoten and know Svolværgeita and its different routes well. The climb is adapted to the group, weather and conditions.

Where do I meet my guide?

You meet your guide at the parking area below Svolværgeita. Here you will meet the rest of the group and receive the necessary climbing equipment before we start the approach to the climb.

Do I need my own climbing equipment?

No. We provide the necessary technical climbing equipment when you meet your guide. You need suitable footwear and clothing for the weather. You will receive more information about what to bring after booking.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Weather and conditions always determine whether it is safe to climb Svolværgeita. If conditions are not suitable, we will assess the situation and try to find the best possible solution for the day. The guide will have the last saying.

When is the best time to climb Svolværgeita?

The main climbing season for Svolværgeita is during the summer months. Weather and conditions can vary throughout the season, and we always assess the conditions before the climb.

Can children climb Svolværgeita?

Generally, we recommend Svolværgeita for participants aged 14 and above. Younger participants may be able to join depending on their climbing experience, physical ability and how comfortable they are with heights. Please contact us before booking if you are unsure.

Do I need to be very fit?

You don’t need to be an athlete. The trip includes a steep approach followed by several pitches of climbing, so a normal level of fitness is recommended.

Climbing with an IFMGA Mountain Guide or aspirant guide gives you professional guidance throughout the experience. Your guide takes care of route choice, safety and the technical aspects of the climb, while adapting the day to the group, weather and conditions.

The History of Svolværgeita

The history of Svolværgeita goes far back. This iconic rock formation has captured people’s attention throughout history.

The First Ascent of Svolværgeita – 1910
The first ascent of Svolværgeita took place in 1910 by Norwegian climbers Ferdinand Schjelderup, Carl Wilhelm Rubenson and Alf Bonnevie Bryn. They had heard many local legends about the seemingly unclimbable mountain and decided to take on the challenge of reaching the horns. In the weeks before, they had climbed Stetind, which also received its first ascent at the time.

It was a highly challenging climb, and most of those watching from Svolvær believed it was impossible to reach the top of Svolværgeita. But after several hours of climbing, the three climbers managed to reach the summit, marking the beginning of the mountain’s popularity among climbers. When they returned to town after the ascent, they were greeted with brass music and celebrations.

The First Jump from Svolværgeita
The first jump from Svolværgeita was made by Arne Randers Heen, a legendary climber from Romsdalen. He often came to Lofoten in connection with the Lofoten winter cod fishery, where he worked as a fisherman. He is also the climber with the most ascents of Romsdalshorn.

Since then, Svolværgeita has become a natural part of Norwegian climbing history and a climbing destination on the bucket list of many. Experienced climbers from all over the world come to Lofoten to attempt the iconic horns. The route established by Schjelderup, Rubenson and Bryn is still climbed today. It is known as the 1910 Route and remains a challenging climb.

The history of Svolværgeita is a testament to how a beautiful natural formation has become a symbol of challenge, adventure and the joy of nature in the region. The mountain attracts visitors from near and far who want to experience its spectacular views and connect with the climbing history embedded in the rock.

Vi var to personer som tok et kurs over tre dager med Vegard som instruktør. Kursdagene ble tilpasset vårt nivå og våre ambisjoner, og vi gikk fra aldri å ha satt naturlige sikringer før til å lede en fem taulengders trad-rute på egenhånd i løpet av tre dager. Vegard var meget god på å både vise og forklare, men også på å la oss prøve oss frem og finne løsninger selv uten å bryte inn mer enn nødvendig.

Vi hadde sett mange bilder derfra på forhånd, og klatringen så både spektakulær og spennende ut.

I Fri Natur stilte med guider, og vi fikk en veldig god opplevelse fra start til slutt. Guidene var hyggelige, profesjonelle og flinke til å skape trygghet underveis. Ei i gruppen hadde gruet seg litt til klatringen, men guidene tok seg god tid, var tålmodige og fulgte henne opp på en veldig fin måte, samtidig som resten av gruppen ble godt ivaretatt.

Vi leide også sykler gjennom I Fri Natur mens vi bodde i Henningsvær. Vi bodde litt utenfor sentrumskjernen, så syklene gjorde det veldig enkelt å komme seg fram og tilbake og rundt ellers i Henningsvær. Det er ikke store avstander, men i løpet av en helg sparte vi både mye tid og en del gåing. Dette var absolutt et stort pluss for oss.

Turen opp Svolværgeita ble et av høydepunktene under oppholdet i Lofoten. Å stå på toppen var en fantastisk opplevelse, og noe vi kommer til å huske lenge.
